How to Speak Fluently without a Conversation Partner
“Ninety-nine percent of failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” – George Washington Carve
Many participants tell me they do not have anyone to practice speaking English with. Let me walk you through a scenario.
Imagine you have achieved a good command of English, perhaps from studying at a convent school or by attending an institute. Once you have improved your English, you might choose to help your friends with their English-speaking skills, or you might focus on developing technical skills to secure a high-paying job.
Most of you would likely choose to learn new skills for a better-paying job. As a result, finding a suitable partner for English-speaking practice can sometimes be challenging.
Let me offer you three practical alternatives for practicing English speaking.
First, you can practice speaking English in front of a mirror. When you are alone, stand before a mirror and start speaking. You can practice freely because a mirror does not judge you. This book includes several scripts you can use for mirror practice. Speaking before a mirror will help you develop spontaneous speech.
Second, try speaking English in front of a camera. You can use your phone or laptop for this. Record yourself speaking, then review the recording. Take note of any weaknesses and work on them by practicing in front of a mirror. Many public speakers recommend video recording as an effective way to improve speaking skills.
Third, connect with others who also want to improve their English-speaking skills. There are several apps, such as Open Talk, available on Google Play that connect users worldwide for this purpose. You can search for similar apps as well.

You don’t need more grammar rules — you need the right technique to start speaking from day one.
While having a partner is helpful, not having one does not mean you cannot improve your speaking skills. You have other options: mirror practice, video recording, and language apps.
I once met an engineering student who had not received any job offers during campus placements because he struggled with English. His next interview was in three to four weeks, and he was anxious about whether he could improve his communication skills in time. I assured him, “If you are serious about improving your English-speaking skills within three weeks, I will help you reach that goal.”
And he was very serious. He practiced English for fourteen hours a day! He used a mirror, recorded himself, and kept practicing because he was determined to get a better job. Eventually, he got a lucrative job offer. I still admire his dedication.
Whenever you face a problem, think of different solutions to try. Choose the best one, and do not give up just because it is hard. Keep testing out different ways until you find what works best for you.
